The Pleasures of Outdoor Cooking

Growing up in South Louisiana all my life, I have watched and learned from the older generation such as my father and my grandfathers on how to cook and enjoy great meals outdoors. Seems like every weekend we were either cooking at home on the patio or out camping, cooking, and fishing. I can remember so many times having the old BBQ Pit going on a Sunday afternoon and watching football games with my father and brothers. My father and both of my grandfathers are passed away now, but every time I fire up the BBQ or gas grill. I think about all the good times we had and all that I learned from them. Now I am teaching and passing on the secrets of cooking outdoors to my children. I don’t know if it just a Louisiana tradition or people all across the world enjoy cooking outdoors. To me, it makes any food taste better.

I think that a gas grill is the perfect addition to any patio. There are so many things that can be cooked on a gas grill. You can do something simple, like grilling hamburgers or hotdogs for the family. You can grill the perfect steaks, just the way you like it. Not like ordering from a restaurant and hoping it comes out the way you ordered it. You also can use your gas grill for slower cooking, because you control the heat just like a stove, to cook things like briskets, ribs, and roasts. Yes, the gas grill is perfect for cooking outdoors.

With all the vast outdoor cooking equipment out there today, there is nothing you can’t cook outdoors. Imagine cooking a stew on an open fire. How about frying fish or shrimp using a propane burner and frying pan. Maybe a good Louisiana chicken and sausage gumbo. How about smoking your favorite meats using an old fashion water smoker or the new electric smokers now. They also have many different varieties of wood chips to flavor to your taste.

All of this sounds relaxing, doesn’t it. I know that every chance I get, I am cooking outdoors. I did last weekend (fried fish and shrimp) and I probably will be cooking outdoors again next weekend.
